High in the Peruvian Andes, more than 4,500 meters above sea level, the Battle of Chiaraje unfolds each year, a violent ritual where two neighboring towns clash in a full-scale recreation of an ancient war. Armed with slingshots, whips, and rocks, over a thousand participants gather for a recreation that’s totally real. Injuries are expected. Deaths occur. And yet, the fighters return year after year.
